One way that I will analyze the behaviors of the X-Men fandom in regard to Magneto is through the lens of reader-response criticism. Reader-response criticism is a methodology, or viewpoint, of reading in which the reader gives the text meaning “by the way they read it” (Gooder 127). As expressed by Wolfgang Iser, one of the founding reader-response theorists, “every text is characterized by ‘gaps’ and sports of indeterminacy,’” so it is then up to the reader to fill in these hole in the literature with their own personal interpretations and meanings (Gooder 129).
