“Magician” Thematic Essay

Raymond E. Feist’s “Magician” is a book filled with action, adventure, and magic taking place in two worlds: Midkemia, and the Tsunari Homeworld. Pug, an orphan, is chosen as the Magician’s apprentice, but when he finds an alien boat things change. The castle of Crydee prepares for war against the Tsunari, Pug is taken slave by them, becoming one of the many losses (Or so it seems) from the war. A lesson this book shows is about how no matter how bad things seem, you must persevere through it. Not only this, but the more dire the situation, the more you may see yourself persevering.

While at the Tsunari Homeworld, Pug describes his day after day lifestyle in the blistering heat of the world. “Day after day I scamper up trees, felling them carefully, keeping my place as a slave, and never upsetting the officers.” This quote shows how Pug perseveres to protect his life, as he could easily step out of line and be killed. This matches the second part of the theme, because when Pug’s life is on the line, he perseveres more in order to survive. We also see the theme in use when Pug gets trapped under a tree in the swamp, struggling to stay above water, and his friend comes to help him. Lauri (the friend) said: “Pug, don’t you drown on me. You keep your head above water, because you deserve to live.” This shows how Pug perseveres to keep his life going, and because his life is on the line, he tries even harder to stay alive. He even came up with a plan to get out from under the tree, which shows how hard he is trying to …show more content…
While trying to close the rift between the two worlds, Feist gives a POV of Pug’s thoughts while sharing his power with Macros. “I felt my grip slipping on the staff, my mind blacking, but I couldn’t stop. I had to stay awake, for me, Macros, and Kulgan.” Pug shows the most perseverance we had seen at that moment, when three lives are in the fates, as he does everything he can to stay awake and keep holding the staff. His perseveration is also showed when he tries to keep the energy in him when he finishes closing the rift (Another POV). “Suddenly the world popped back into view and I could feel my knees failing. My only thoughts being, ‘Just keep breathing.’” It shows him once again struggling to survive, even after the threat was over. The situation was life or death, and Pug did his best to keep breathing and survive the loss of

This ideology of confronting one 's inner fears through obstacles and becoming more powerful each time, propel the hero of the story to become an epic hero at the end of their journeys of self-discovery. Odysseus in The Odyssey recited by Homer was certainly not exempt from the title of ‘Epic Hero’ due to his skills and his sympathizable traits’ and his fantastical adventures. While some may say The Odyssey is a tale of Odysseus piecing his life together, Odysseus is an epic hero nonetheless for his divine physical and mental abilities, with a wide appeal for his traditional Greek traits such as his yearning for his family and faith.
