Magical Realism In Bless Me Ultima, By Gabriel Garcia Marquez

Imagine seeing a couple walking down the street and then looking away and the looking back to see the women now a llama. Magical realism is when magical elements blend to together into one world. One is realistic and the other one is a type of magical realism. Even though magical realism is a form of fantasy it has many elements. For example, when a metamorphosis takes place, when magic occurs without using devices, and when an ordinary object takes a life of its own. The readers can find these elements in different stories or even movie, for example in Bless Me Ultima, by Rudolfo A. Anaya or in another story titled “ A Very Old Man with Enormous Wings,” by Gabriel Garcia Marquez.

One element of magical realism is when a metamorphosis takes place in the story. For example, in the story Bless Me Ultima, by Rudolfo A. Anaya Ultima is curing lucas when all of a sudden she hears coyotes stretching at the wall, her owl then swoops down and attacks them. She then says, “ Oh those trementina girls will be cut and bruised tomorrow” (92). The common belief amongst the people living in El Puerto is

In the movie titled “ Big Fish,” directed by Tim Burton trees attacked a man named Edward Bloom. Edward was leaving a town called Spectre when all of a sudden the trees come to life and attack him. Another example is in the story by Rudolfo A. Anaya were Ultima is making these cay dolls, when stabbing them they act as if they are alive.” She broke it in three pieces, molded three dolls, lifelike and dressed with scraps of cloth.’’ The common belief is that one can create dolls from parts from the owner. Another quote can be “ She lifted the three dolls and held them to my sick uncle’s mouth , and when he breathed on them they seemed to squirm in her hands.’’ They squirmed because the evil they have done has been removed.
