Extraordinarily Ordinary Magical Realism uses the extraordinary to show a person a different view on the world they live in. It allows one to be taken away from a very boring and mundane way of life, and afterwards one sees things previously taken for granted. Magical Realism was created by two South American authors, Marquez and Borges. Marquez is also the author of A Very Old Man with Enormous Wings, so it makes sense that he wrote about a literary classification he helped create. A Very Old Man with Enormous Wings is a clear example of Magical Realism; it is shown through the plot, as well as the character’s actions. The problem is that this angel is not all goodness and light. He is in fact quite the opposite, he smells, he can’t fly, he can’t communicate with anyone or speak god’s language, he is bald and almost toothless, and his wings are dirty (Shmoop Editorial Team). So some people, like the priest, are very skeptical of the old man. He begins to test him by speaking to him in Latin. When the old man doesn’t respond, he finds it very hard to believe that an angel of god wouldn’t understand god’s language. Pelayo and Elisenda’s house and yard turned into a major event, a carnival showed up and markets were set up near the main attraction. Elisenda even wanted to charge people five cents each to see the man in the chicken coop. The entire situation was treated as if it were a festival and celebration. In a real world scenario, people would be freaking out and the government would be taking major military action against a strange winged man appearing out of nowhere. The world would be in a state of panic. However, everyone is happy to see such an amazing thing, they are playing games, throwing food in to the cage for the man to eat, and people are taking advantage to make as much money as
