Magazine Analysis Of Cosmopolitan Magazine

I am analyzing the April 2016 edition of Cosmopolitan magazine. The front cover immediately shows that the magazine is meant for women and is geared toward their interests. Kaley Cuoco is on the cover and she is dressed up in an attractive swimsuit and shorts. They show off her beauty, but do not make her look over sexualized, which could detract from the appeal to women. The biggest text is yellow and says “glow on!” The word glow is a feminine word because women want to be noticed and look radiant and glowing. The magazine showcases covering sex, acne, workouts for your butt and legs and online dating advice. Essentially, the magazine is advertising that it covers looking attractive and getting a man. The title is partially covered by Cuoco’s …show more content…
For example, Chrissy Teigan is advertising for TreSemme hair products and has several pictures of her perfect hair on the first page of the magazine. Another advertisement is for Bebe clothes and the models advertising the clothes are in a laundry mat doing their laundry. This ad relies on a gender stereotype that women are meant to be housewives that spend their day looking beautiful and doing laundry. The Bebe slogan is remix, reinvent and redefine, which I find very interesting considering they are actively portraying women in sexist duties. This is in contrast to an Amazon advertisement that is for their clothes. Their slogan is “Smart is Beautiful” and the models are in business …show more content…
The answer was an automatic no. Although, it might be normal to be turned on by non-heterosexual sex when you are heterosexual it showed that the audience was heterosexual and was not interested in hearing other sexualities and what their sexual perspective was. Kaley Cuoco is one of the older cover girls of Cosmo. However you wouldn’t know it from her pictures throughout the magazine. She is wearing fun summer baseball clothes and swimsuits. Her outfits look childish and what a little girl would wear to the baseball park. Cosmo tried to make her look younger to appeal to the younger audience and not lose their interest since Cuoco is 30 and divorced. Her experience and place in life is vastly different than most of the readers. However, Cosmo makes her relatable to the audience by focusing on her heartbreak, a universal

For example, in ‘Old Spice - Question’ have numerous gender stereotypes and messages being displayed. In this Old Spice advertisement, it begins with a shirtless, well build and masculine man holding body wash at a beach. Mustafa, the character promoting the product, has a very deep voice and starts of the commercial by saying “Hello Ladies, does your man look like me?” This instantly grabs many women’s attention by the sound of his voice and how it is being displayed. This is especially detrimental to young boys because they grow up to believe that those are the things a woman values in a man, and that is the type of man they should be.…

In today’s society, beauty is defined by what we see from celebrities on social media and magazines. When one looks at thin, flawless models, it is hard to look in a mirror and call themself beautiful. “Easy, Breezy, beautiful, CoverGirl,” is a phrase that was found by CoverGirl and associated it with their brand. CoverGirl is a makeup brand that stresses every woman is beautiful and makeup is meant to enhance their natural beauty, not to cover it. A commercial I choose from CoverGirl shows that girls are able to do anything just as much as guys are able to.…

For my observation, I decided to go to Macy’s, a large department store in Coronado Mall. I entered Macy’s from the first floor of the mall, where their makeup and perfume section is prominently displayed. Almost all the cashiers in the makeup and perfume department were female, except for one man. Behind the makeup department are women’s clothes, lined with racks of sale items. There are two more sections of women’s clothing upstairs, ranging from ‘juniors’ to ‘plus-size’.…

In magazines aimed at the general population, including Sports Illustrated and Vanity Fair, women are oversexualized with provocative slogans, little to no clothing, and electronically edited photos. This creates an apparent distinction between what the media reinforces as the ideal woman and what women really look like. Here, a phenomenon called the feminine beauty ideal arises. The feminine beauty ideal is "the socially constructed notion that physical attractiveness is one of women 's most important assets, and something all women should strive to achieve and maintain." GQ Magazine is a popular men’s magazine. The author and designer of the magazine cover clearly wanted to catch the male eye. The author successfully accomplished this by putting a picture of Jenifer Anniston, who is a very attractive female, on the cover sitting naked with a red, white, and blue tie around her neck. On the other hand, the second magazine also caught the male eye. The male sitting nude caught the eye of males who are either gay or looking at it to judge the person on the cover.…

Advertisements are a means of selling and promoting a product for a better profit. Content within advertisements is often a topic of debate. In a lecture on October 17, 2016, to a COMM 1100 class, Professor Braithwaite stated that ideologies are an encouraged way of thinking and often demonstrated in advertisements. This Calvin Klein advertisement specifically demonstrates an ideology of male domination and female subordination to the audience. This is a common trope seen in advertisements.…

In modern day America, there is hardly a time when an individual can do anything without being barraged by ads, whether it be on one’s phone, computer, or simply walking down the street. Most advertisement people see usually depicts women participating in actions that could suggest sexual intent, to endorse products that have nothing to do with the way they are being portrayed. Clearly there are numerous problems with the way of thinking ads today are promoting through the objectification of women, and now occasionally men. However the objectification of the genders has been a long ongoing battle for quite some time now as advertisement has long capitalized on stereotypes of women and the sexual interests of men, going far enough to create…
