The following report provides a comprehensive analysis of the statuette of the Madonna di Tindari shown in Figure 1. Through an evaluation of the significance of this object, this report will demonstrate that the statuette would make an excellent addition to the collection of the Italian Historical Society, exhibited at the Museo Italiano in Melbourne. First, a description of the statuette will be provided. In addition to recording the object’s physical attributes, this description will also document its provenance and current ownership status. Next, a section will be dedicated to outlining why the Museo Italiano should acquire this statuette. Museo Italiano interprets and displays a collection of artefacts, photographs and documents including letters, official records and newspaper clippings, which pertain to Italian migration and culture in Australia. The majority of this material has been donated by first generation Australians and their descendants. Although the focus of the collection is the heritage and history of the Italian community in Victoria, collection objects represent the collective experiences of Italian-Australians across the country. Themes explored in both permanent and temporary exhibitions at the museum include migration, settlement, interaction, diversity, identity, language, culture, and community life. Most relevant to the statuette is the museum’s focus on identity. For Leonarda, the statuette is an expression of her identity.
