Throughout her career, the pop icon known as Madonna has been both widely influential and wildly controversial. Since her beginnings in the music industry, she has consistently made headlines, drawing the admiration of her most dedicated fans and the attention of curious onlookers. Lucy O’Brien’s book, titled “Madonna: Like an Icon” is an attempt at chronicling the pop singer’s life thus far in a “definitive biography”. This book is an in depth and interesting read on the reasoning and influences behind Madonna’s musical career. Through presentation of well researched facts and interesting quotes from various people in Madonna’s life, Lucy O’Brien presents a very unique look at the superstar’s life. However, Lucy O’Brien predominantly focuses on the music process as Madonna prepared to release her album True Blue. The most successful album of Madonna’s discography, it featured notable hits such as “Live to Tell”, “Papa Don’t Preach”, “Open Your Heart” and “La Isla Bonita”. Her unhappiness in while filming Hong Kong prompted her to write the lyrics to “La Isla Bonita” (O’Brien 2007 page 103), a good reflection of how Madonna channeled her feelings into her music. The album, dedicated to then husband Sean Penn, has a different, more upbeat tone than her previous two, being more thematically about love. She embarked on her “Blond Ambition World Tour” which was filmed backstage for the movie “Truth or Dare”, giving fans a surreal inside look at the tour.
