A madman is defined as a person who is extremely foolish and acts very recklessly. In the play The Tragedy of Hamlet by William Shakespeare, Hamlet faces the trauma of his father’s death, his uncle quickly remarrying his mother, which denies Hamlet the throne, and the ghost of his deceased father, and his love for Ophelia, which all contribute to cause Hamlet to go insane or become a “madman”.
King Hamlet dies and this is the first thing that sends Hamlet on a one way trip to depression and insanity. Any loving son would be devastated by the death of his father and Hamlet is no different. Revenge drives drives people to drive crazy stuff and Hamlet is no exception. Hamlet attacks Claudius when he finds out that he poisoned the drink the call his mother, Gertrude. Hamlet then stabs Claudius with the infected poisonous sword that promptly kills Claudius. Hamlet, being wounded by the same sword, knows he is going to die soon but still grabs the poisoned cup and chants, “Here, thou incestuous, murd’rous, damned Dane, drink off this potion! Is thy union here? Follow my mother” (V, 2, 345-347). These final words of Hamlet leads to the climax of finally achieving his goal; kill Claudius, who was the root of Hamlet’s insanity. The ones to blame for Hamlet’s insanity would be his family and the people around him. He and the ghost of his father have an encounter and the ghost tells him to kill his stepfather. Gertrude place Hamlet in a very awkward situation by remarrying so quickly. By Gertrude getting married to his uncle, it denies Hamlet the throne and crown. Hamlet has to get revenge and kill somebody. Hamlet loved a traitor in Ophelia and all of these things stirred the pot of insanity and depression of Hamlet.
