Madelia--There are so many reasons to love a parade. There is the festiveness of the environment, the people, the music, the fire trucks, the floats, or the fact that it is the only place where it is socially acceptable to eat candy found on street. It is difficult to find somebody who dislikes parades.
On an beautiful Friday night a parade was held in Madelia for the 41st annual Madelia Park Days. There was no raining on this parade. While members of the VFW open the parade with the presentation of our state, and national flag, the spectators prepared for the parade.
After the color guard passed by, the fire trucks and emergency vehicles came next unleashing their sirens and lights for the entire town to see and hear.
After the entrance of the emergency vehicles the parade was under way. Spectators were waiting to see the beautifully made floats, hear the music from a number of different bands, or for individuals with a sweet tooth, simply waiting for a chance to grab some candy from any of the passing floats.
One of the very first groups in the parade was the rolling car show. Each car trying to prove itself against the others. There was no shortage of engine revving and burnouts to get the crowds lining the streets to bask in the glory of these machines. The smell of exhaust and burnt rubber lingered in the air even after the cars had left.
There were also a number of different bands that marched or rode in the parade. St. Peter, Mankato Lancers, and Maple River all had marching bands performing in the parade. In addition to the conventional marching bands there were also groups that were pulled on a float like the Minnesota Over 60 Band, or the Schell’s Hobo

You can feel the community environment of veterans, the local civilians in a military-dominated city, and their families gaining that sense of community through music and by the uniquely military nature of its transmission. As with the nature of the military, the specific band members rotate in and out with their tours of duty but the main instrumentation played remains, the show continues to go on, and the 32nd Street Brass Band lives on (Reichow 2017).
