Madeleine Albright: The Good Of Evil

Decent Essays
In the quote above, Madeleine Albright is talking about how we see evil all around us and take notice in that more than the good in life. We can think of evil things off the top of our heads, but when we actually see it, it’s a tough pill to swallow. We know it’s bad and we can certainly tell, but when things are good we can’t detect it as well. Albright is trying to tell readers that good is hard to find. Good is something that we need more of in life and not many people have it. They may have sort of good or good enough, like Albright said, but not absolute good. Absolute good is the good of great. This kind of good is harder to imagine because we don’t point it out as much as we do evil. Madeleine Albright has a really interesting point

In the book The Brother Karamazov, two of the major themes that are discussed in the chapter of Rebellion are the contrasting relationships between naturalism and Christianity in relation to suffering. To better understand the relationship between both of these differing beliefs, it is best understood from the main character’s perspective, who is Ivan. He does not endorse either naturalism or Christianity because he believes that neither of them are the solution to stop the suffering in the society. Also, he believes that they are both equally and morally unjust and lack accountability among its offenders and followers.…

Over the past couple of weeks President Jane Dove of the United States has faced a potential Secession from the South Western States of the United States, these States are: California, Arizona, New Mexico, Texas, Colorado and Nevada. These States called themselves Nuevo Aztlan under Dr. Fonseca leadership, who master minded the secession plot in 2032 against the United States of America. It is obvious that this was a test to the first female president of the United States war-making and emergency powers under the United States constitution without consulting congress first, who have the explicit powers to declare war. Web. 28 Mar. 2016. The critic, Katherine Keil, argues that the grandmother in O’Connor’s short story “A Good Man Is Hard to Find” achieves clarity in vision in the eyes of Christian views by the end of the story. She claims that “lacking spiritual fulfillment, both Coleridge’s sailor and O’Connor’s grandmother journey through the desert of alienation and experience an epiphany that results in resurrection and rebirth” (n.p.).…

Flannery O’Connor’s short story “A Good Man is Hard to Find” is a story of hypocrisy and irony. O’Connor’s tale of twisted morals and fleeting grasps at old standards takes a family from an innocent trip to Florida to an impending doom laid out before them by the narrator in the first paragraph. The fill of the story is one based on a grandmother’s traditional ways and the conflicting norms of their modern day society. A dying woman’s last attempt at life initially seems valiant, but the 1955 tale brings to light the error in her entire belief system and the proper foundation The Misfit has built his steadfastly on (SparkNotes). The tale brings to light a remorseless view of the world from two different eyes, a hypocritical grandmother and a…

In “A Good Man Is Hard to Find” I believe the grandmother means when she calls someone a good man, that they are a person whose values are those that match her own. For instance, she first calls Red Sammy Butts a good man, and what I believe she meant by that is he tries to the two gentlemen out by lending them gas on credit even though they never pay for the gas. He was trying to do a good deed and the grandmother noticed. The grandmother declared both Redd and the misfit to be good people. They are the only two she claimed to be a good man.…

These expressions show how The Misfit was possibly once considered an unequivocally good person, and again reinstates O'Connor's theme of how the lines between good and evil are so easily blurred. For that in every good person, lie malicious tendencies. The foundation of good and evil is one that is recognizable across all humanity, though Flannery O'Connor easily shows her readers how that very basis not easily defined. With the two main characters of "A Good Man is Hard to Find," O'Connor uses efficient characterization to display her theme of how good and evil can be actively…

Queen Wealtheow portrays the opposite side of that same coin, as she is anything but animalistic in nature, although she still has very little dialogue in the text. The first time readers actually hear her speak is when she bids Beowulf to “enjoy this drink, most generous lord / raise up your goblet” (1168-9). She functions only as a companion to her husband, King Hrothgar, and to present goblets of mead to important guests. Her distance from the events and main plot lends to her air of royalty and gives her character the feel of a fairy godmother--aloof and removed, but with everyone’s well-being at heart. In this way she is different from Grendel’s mother; Wealtheow is a warm, benevolent presence whereas Grendel’s mother is evil and cruel, but both are unrepresented in the dialogue of the story.…

A major theme of Flannery O 'Connor 's “A Good Man Is Hard To Find” is what makes a person good. There is no clear answer, neither in the text nor in life. It is safe to say that a good person can be defined as one that is honest, kind, and always tries to do what is right. It is ironic then, maybe even a bit hypocritical, that the Grandmother is one of the most immoral characters in the story and yet she spends much of her time talking about what makes people good, judging others based on little to no information about them, and trying to convince the Misfit, a serial killer that just murdered her family, of his own goodness.…
