She is worried about what she is going to wear and is worried about not having good enough jewelry, so she borrows a diamond necklace from her wealthy friend. The story “The Necklace” is centered around 19th century Paris, creating the setting of the grand and glamourous life (Shmoop). This life affected the behavior, creating the desire inside of Madame Loisel for all of the finer things in life. This ultimately caused the Loisel’s downfall and really demonstrated the division of classes from the story. The author was criticising the bourgeoisie and their behavior of oppressing the middle and lower classes, mostly unconsciously. The world tempts humans with things such as wealth, status, and power. Instead of being content with what is given, humans acquire the sinful nature of wanting more and more. Madame Loisel in “The Necklace” could not be satisfied with her life, and the blessings before her. Madame Loisel’s greed did not only lead her to more unhappiness and dissatisfaction, but it caused her to express dishonesty, pretend to be someone she is not, and let her possessions possess her. Miller wrote, “After a lifetime of yearning for it, Madame Loisel is confronted with an upper class that isn’t what it was supposed to be in her vision” (1).…

In an ideal world, you shouldn’t have to choose, but both of these stories aren’t told in an ideal world, much the opposite. Would Madame Loisel rather not know she wasted ten years of her life paying off a debt that wasn’t real or is she glad she knows? I would be very hard pressed to know that the necklace was a fake after all that time, some things are better left unknown. Maybe the past ten years was good for her since she finally became the middle-class wife she was intended to be all along. I think this question is much different than The Jewels.…

When Madame Loisels husband bought her a ticket to the ball, she wasnt happy because she didn't have a dress she could use to the ball and her husband had some money saved up to buy a gun and go hunting with his friends, but then he gave her that money to buy a dress she could use for everything but he still wasn't happy she wanted something else to go with the dress and he had a great idea to ask her friend if she could use a necklace or something. The reason why Madame loisel aged is because she worked for 10 years and it was all because she didn't tell the truth to her friend and she got older because of not telling the truth and for trying to be someone she isn't, her and her husband got poorer than they were to start because they had to pay a lot of money back to the people. Explore the issue of belonging and how it is presented in ‘An Unknown Girl’ (Moniza Alvi) and ‘The Necklace’ (Guy de Maupassant) Although one is a poem and the other a famous short story, both ‘An Unknown Girl’ and ‘The Necklace’ are united by one ubiquitous theme: the issue of belonging. ‘An Unknown Girl’ explores how the narrator, who remains anonymous, finds her sense of belonging in an Indian bazaar through hennaing, with the help of an unknown girl. In ‘The Necklace’, Maupassant tells through realism the tale of a young woman, Madame Loisel, who attempts to leave behind her mediocre life and find acceptance in the upper classes of society. This ultimately results in the loss of a diamond necklace, and Loisel’s spiral into deeper poverty…
