In the short story “The Necklace” the necklace plays a major symbolic role. The Necklace symbolizes high social status and wealth. When Mathilde gets invited to the party she insists on looking wealthy. “No; theres nothing more humiliating than to look poor among other women who are rich”(881). She needs an accessory that makes her look rich so she can fit in with the other women. The necklace she borrows from Madame Forestier symbolizes her aspirations of being in the higher place in society. She believes that wearing a string of diamonds will represent her social class. Even though Madame Forestier doesn’t tell her the necklace is fake, she still is envious of Madame Forestier's wealthy life. She was never skeptical of the necklace. She
