Madame Defarge's Revenge In A Tale Of Two Cities

In tale of two cities, the leader of the females in the revolution, Madame Defarge is bent on revenge. The book is based on the fact that Madame Defarge wants revenge on the Evermonds. Madame Defarge obviously believes in collective guilt. If she didn’t, than a lot less people would have died. She would have only killed the one/few involved in her families killing. I do not believe in collective guilt. A group of people can be guilty, but not everyone even kind of associated with the wrong doing is in the wrong. Believing in collective guilt means that you believe that once someone does something wrongs, all of their family, friends, and of course anyone actually involved are immediately guilty of that wrong doing as well. One particular debate that has bedeviled humanity since its inception is the question of the nature of human morality. We as humans argue about the source of morality: most religious fundamentalists argue that morality comes from a deity, whereas secularists tend to argue that morality comes from within and is subjective. We also argue about its objectivity, and many will attest that their moral code is a paragon above all others. Morality is a code by which most sane humans live their lives; it would seem logical that such a dominant force in human interaction would foster such discourse. Amongst all the uncertainty in the nature of morality, however, there is but one certainty: morality is based entirely on perspective.…

“When large enough groups of people gather, things will get accomplished, good or bad.” stated Marc Bousquet of Emory University. This is the state of mob mentality, the individual’s subconscious “decision” to follow the crowd’s movements sometimes not even knowing (whether the effects will be good or bad) (the effects). Understanding how the mob mentality works, and how it can affect individuals as well as groups, can help us better understand the situations and the characters’ motives in The Crucible by Arthur Miller. While reading A Tale of Two Cities I noticed an abundance of conflicts which arose can be traced back to the female characters and the lack of education for them. The main conflict of the story and the root of all problems that occured in the book was caused by the sexual abuse of Madame DeFarge’s sister from Marquis Evremonde who was a rich french aristocrat. She is an example of a girl living in France during the Revolution who would hugely benefit from free education and empowerment. After her sister’s rape Madame Defarge, known as a sinister character and later becomes liable for Carton’s death, became unable to feel compassion and love for other people; in her words, “the Evrémonde people are to be exterminated, and the wife and child…

Several catastrophic events in history have been attributed to the phenomenon of groupthink. First identified by Irving Janis, groupthink occurs when a group makes faulty decisions because group pressures lead to a deterioration of “mental efficiency, reality testing, and moral judgment” (1972, p. 9). Specific conditions such as a highly cohesive group, leader preference for a certain decision, and insulation of the group from qualified outside opinions are precursors to factors known as symptoms of groupthink. These symptoms include “illusion of invulnerability, collective rationalization, belief in inherent morality, stereotyped views of out-groups, direct pressure on dissenters, self-censorship, illusion of unanimity and self-appointed mindguards” (Rosenblum, 1982, p. 3). Because of groupthink, disastrous decisions were made that led to the loss of lives in the space shuttle Challenger launch in…
