Madame Defarge Quotes

Improved Essays
Quote: We chose this quote because it showed how evil Madam Defarge is towards the aristocrats. Lucid and Little Lucid are condemned to death (registers in the knitting) by Madam Defarge merely because of association with an aristocrat. This quote shows the contrast between Madame Defarge and Lucie and how Madame Defarge's evil makes Lucie look purer and vice versa. The quote shows that there have been many years of suffering for the wives and mothers of peasants, this is how she justifies killing a mother and child. Madame Defarge asks why should Lucie be saved from their suffering if all the women before her were not saved from suffering? However much Lucie begs Madame to save her husband, Madame’s hatred toward the aristocracy has consumed her.

Light vs Dark

The bright subjects include both Lucie and her daughter. Lucie is well-lit since she is a pure person and is not going to be directly affected by Madame Defarge, only indirectly with Darnay and her daughter. Little Lucie, on the other hand, is lit for the most part, however she is in the shadow of Defarge. This refers to how Defarge wanted to see Little Lucie so people could know what she looks like. The final subject in the picture is Madame Defarge. She is almost fully enclosed in darkness, this makes her seem more evil and sinister. Her dark aura is enclosing both the letter and, more importantly Little Lucie. This is important due to the fact that, Madame Defarge has now seen Little Lucie and can now put her on the list. Before today nobody other than people close to Lucie knew what she looked
