“And she was known as Madam Eglantyne” (125). Throughout the nun’s section in the canterbury tales prolog we come to find out this quote sums up the nun quite nicely. This line encompasses everything the nun is, elegant, well mannered, and caring.
One of the things the nun feels is important is, to be seen among the travelers as elegant. She shows this in the way she eats by not letting her hands get dirty, and in the way she sings hymns. Closeness to God is heavily emphasized in the Catholic Church. In John Patrick Shanley’s play Doubt, this relationship is mentioned in Sister Aloysius’ comment to Sister James: “In the pursuit of wrongdoing, one steps away from God. Of course, there’s a price” (58). Often when one strives to prevent misbehavior, they undermine their own morality in the process, leading to deep repercussions. Still, the question remains, is it worth it?…

reveals the aptitude at which Richard exercised language and concealed truth for triumph against the odds of “all the world to nothing”. Richard feigns gentleness and artfully praises her beauty, evident in anaphora when he soulfully confesses, “your beauty was the cause of that effect, your beauty did haunt me in my sleep”, where language hyperbolically projects Anne’s beauty as a consequence of Richard’s rhetorical prowess. Furthermore the use of pun in “thine eyes, sweet lady, have infected mine”, demonstrates the tone of mockery used in Richard attempts to woo Anne. The juxtaposition between Anne’s…

The goal of this document is the analytical breakdown of Jeanne Wakatsuki Houston’s book titled Farewell to Manzanar. The book is a recollection of her time at an internment camp called ‘Manzanar’ when she was a child along with a few excerpts to give depth to some of the events that took place. As noted in the p.s before the book begins, she and her husband decided to write the story of what life was like in the internment camps and not focussing on the overall scheme of how “an injustice was done.” (Wakatsuki Houston, Foreward) since many were already in agreement on that matter and the topic considered old and tired. The focus of this paper will be on how the events affected her childhood, broke her family, emphasized her ethnicity, and…

Rattling Earrings and Incoherent Nuns: Examining Control in “Nuns at Luncheon” At the start of Aldous Huxley’s short story, “Nuns at Luncheon”, we find our narrator obsessed with his lunch-mate’s pendant earrings, referring to them both admiringly and mockingly, as “corpses hanging in chains” (250), and then congratulating himself on producing a brilliant literary simile. As we become acquainted with Miss Penny’s flamboyant and intimidating character, we understand that these earrings are not just two small ornaments on a person covered in rattling trinkets. The earrings weave their way into the story through our narrator’s beguiled eyes, as Miss Penny herself begins to tell him a story, of Sister Agatha, the nun, whom she met on a recent…
