Madalyn Murray O’Hair filed the case in her son’s name which was Murray v. Curlett. The case was then consolidated into Abington School Distract v. Schempp and was brought fourth to the Supreme Court. Abington School Distract v. Schempp was another similar lawsuit filed by Edward Schempp who was a Unitarian Universalist and believed it was unconstitutional that public schools required his children to read and hear portions of the Bible as part of their public school education. Compared to an American Religious tradition though I would say they are a “loser”. I think this is because they do not believe in gods or have a common belief system, there is no real appeal to join the American Atheist organization. The only appeal for atheists to join the American Atheists is to become an activist and to join in the efforts to separate church and state. While I do think that American religions are on decline and secular humanism, agonism and atheism are on the rise I do not think this means this organization is growing.
