This theme caused my to think about authority figures in this world. Most of the authority figures in this world rely heavily upon the media to portray a certain image of them. How they are portrayed through the media is all we see; we do not get to see how they act when the cameras are not on them. Because of this, authority figures can hide weakness and make themselves seem better and stronger than they really are. For example, President Franklin D. Roosevelt had a secret agreement with the press to hide his polio from the American public. For example, the ruling family of the Citadel has many problems. Immortan Joe has trouble breathing and has a horrible skin condition. The sons of Immortan Joe also have problems. One is deformed and cannot do anything for himself while the other has trouble breathing like his father. Immortan Joe’s weakness are shown in the very beginning of the film. A young child is shown blowing dust on his horrible skin condition. After this servants put a plastic chest piece on to hide his skin and make him look like he has muscles to the common people. Then he puts on a mask to help him breathe. After all of these things his weaknesses are hidden and he gives a speech from very high up so he can not be seen in detail. Because of all these things Immortan Joe is depicted as an almighty immortal god to the people, despite all his weaknesses.
The ruler of gastown, The People Eater, also has problems. This is shown later in the film when Max jumps into his vehicle. After Max pulls out the driver, The People Eater is helpless to defend himself because he is overweight and has a clubfoot. He is so weak despite being called “The People Eater”.
