Glaucoma is not curable, but Bimatoprost prevents further damage to the eye from vision impairment. Bimatoprost eye drops reduce the pressure in the eye by increasing the amount of fluid flowing from the eye. It is used in the eye exclusively and do not take it with your nose and mouth.…
Wilmer ophthalmologists are leading experts in the study, diagnosis and treatment of AMD. Because AMD can be relentless in its assault on vision, early diagnosis is critical to begin monitoring for the wet form. Wilmer has led development of studies of automated analysis and detection of this earlier stage, as well as studies evaluating devices that may be used in the home to detect conversion of the drug to wet form before substantial vision loss has occurred, when treatment has the greatest chance to preserve vision. While there is no cure, age-related macular degeneration treatments may prevent severe vision loss or slow the progression of the disease considerably. Several treatment options are available, including: Anti-vascular endothelial…
OPUS-1 is a 12-week, phase III, multicenter, randomized, prospective, double-masked, placebo-controlled trial to investigate the efficacy and safety of lifitegrast 5% ophthalmic solution versus placebo twice daily for 84 days. The study was conducted from August 2011 to May 2012 with a total of 588 patients. Inclusion criteria consist of patients at least 18 years of age with a history of dry eye in both eyes. Exclusion criteria are the use of topical ophthalmic preparations within 72 hours, significant loss of blood within 56 days or history of LASIK surgery 12 months prior to Visit 1. Individuals with eye conditions such as inflammation, glaucoma and/or diabetic retinopathy, or any significant illnesses are also excluded.…
Marla Runyan: A Visually Impaired Athlete Marla Runyan is a world-class track and field athlete, who competed for the United States Olympic Team in 2000. She also happens to have Stargardt’s disease, which makes her legally blind. Marla once said, “If I break a national record, maybe they will stop writing about my eyes” (LaFontaine 228).…
Purpose: The purpose of this memorandum is to present an analysis of the person(s) who would read this report. This report was created as one of the projects for a Writing for Technical Professional class. The goal of this project was to analyze the success of a medical innovation. My chosen topic was Focused Ultra Sound that enhance the drug delivery for treatment of CNS diseases.…
Currently, the AgioVue OCT-A (RTVue XR Avanti; Optovue Inc, Fremont, CA) is the first commercially available OCT device able to provide OCT-A images. Additionally, OCT-A allows the analysis of the superficial capillary plexus (SCP) and deep capillary plexus (DPC) which can be examined in isolation contrary to FA, that is not able to visualize all relevant vessel layer in the retina. Ref spaide cystoid macula edema. A new software update released by AngioVue system allows quantification of the percentage of the area occupied by vessel lumens, around the macula in all retinal plexuses, defined as Vascular Density (VD).…
(Kanski, 1992). Non-exudative (dry) is by far the most common type of age-related macular degeneration. Typically it causes a mild to moderate impairment of vision over several months or years. Non-exudative AMD is either a result of a progressive and slow break down of the retinal pigment epithelium…
If treated early it is possible to slow or stop the progression of disease with medication, laser treatment, or surgery. The goal of these treatments is to decrease eye pressure. A number of different classes of glaucoma medication are available. Laser treatments may be effective in both open-angle and closed-angle glaucoma. A number of types of glaucoma surgeries may be used in people who do not respond sufficiently to other measures.…
There are no FDA approved medical treatments but there are small amounts of clinical trials. The two main clinical trials are the Age-Related Eye Disease Study, AREDS, and a AREDS 52 have shown that nutritional supplements that have antioxidant vitamins and multivitamins, that contain lutein and zeaxanthin, help reduce the process of wet AMD occurring during dry AMD. Sadly none of these treatments have been beneficial towards prevention of dry AMD. So far the only considerable treatment from developing dry AMD is to exercise, maintain a healthy diet, wear sunglasses, and stay clear of HEV…
Home Helpers and Macular Degeneration According to the American Macular Degeneration Foundation, "macular degeneration is the leading cause of vision loss, affecting more than 10 million Americans - more than cataracts and glaucoma combined. " It is currently incurable. Macular degeneration affects more than a third of seniors over the age of 75. Carl Kupfer, the former Director of the National Eye Institute, notes that unless a breakthrough is made in identification and treatment, macular degeneration will become an epidemic.…
In dry macular degeneration the macula starts to thin and break down. Wet macular degeneration is caused when fluid leaks into the subretinal space. In some cases blood vessels will leak, spilling blood into the subretinal. However not much is known about how or why it happens ("macular degeneration”).…
Muscular degenerative disease is a malfunction in the body that often weakens the skeletal muscles and prevents function in the body. The disease was discovered in 1861 by a French neurologist named Guillaume Benjamin Amand Duchenne, but the discovery of the cause was founded in 1886 ("Diseases - DMD”). One particular muscular dystrophy that affects children is called Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD) in which a small percentage of boys are born with. DMD is a muscular disease that causes muscles to weaken, inability to function properly, and cardiorespiratory problems. Though the effects of the muscular disease is devastating and is at a high risk for anyone of the inherited family disease and those of not, with the acceptable treatment before…
Alzheimer disease Most of people are confused between dementia and Alzheimer. Dementia is a syndrome like an umbrella and Alzheimer is the symptom of it. Alzheimer effects on the brain and get it worse day by day. There are two causes of Alzheimer disease: plaques and tangles. Plaques happens when the protein accumulates between the cells on the brain.…
ABSTRACT Diabetic retinopathy (DR) remains a major complication of diabetes and the leading cause of blindness among adults worldwide. DR is a progressive disease affecting both type I and type II diabetic patients at any stage of the disease, and targets the macrovascular and microvascular systems of the retina. DR results from multiple biochemical, molecular and pathophysiological changes to the retinal vasculature which affect both microcirculatory functions and ultimately photoreceptor function. Several neural, endothelial and support cell (pericytes, glia) mechanisms are altered in a pathological fashion in the hyperglycemic environment during diabetes which can disturb important cell surface components in the vasculature producing…
In this report the role of the government in pharmaceutical regulation will be explored. Examples of how the government regulates the pharmaceutical industry will be presented; furthermore, each event will be analysed to determine whether the regulation was from a public or private interest theory perspective. In the end the goal is to reveal the dominant theory of regulation in the industry and which theory better predicts the outcome of events presented. The government’s role in the pharmaceutical industry always starts with a regulatory body.…
