Macromolecules are large molecules essential to all living organisms in order for their cells to function. There are four classes of macromolecules that individuals should have in their diet, and these includes: proteins, carbohydrates lipids, and nucleic acid is important. In this lab activity, the students extended their understanding on the importance of the macromolecules in a human body. One of individuals concern nowadays is weight loss. However, most people lack an understanding how important for a human body to maintain a balance diet in order for their body to function properly.

This macromolecule is very important for body as a source of energy and a building material for your cells. Monosaccharides are one type of carbohydrates that are quickly absorbed as energy and they are found in foods like fruits. Carbohydrates are source of energy to the body, mainly through glucose, a simple sugar that is contained in various foods (Importance of Carbohydrates, 2015). To add more to that, carbohydrates has soluble and insoluble classes. The insoluble type is well-known as fiber, which regulates regular bowel movement, controls the rate of ingestion of blood glucose, and also supports to remove additional cholesterol from the body (Importance of Carbohydrates, 2015). Carbohydrates are important because when glucose is broken down throughout the cellular respiration, which makes ATP, the energy currency of the cell (Importance of Carbohydrates, 2015). Nitrogen is essential for constructing proteins and producing nucleic acids. Nucleic acids (like DNA) contain genetic information, which are the blueprints from which proteins are made (Lions Talk Science, 2015). According to class discussion, amino acids are the building blocks of proteins. There are 21 amino acids, but human body can only produce 12 of them (Lions Talk Science, 2015). The other 9, named essential amino acids, must be ingested in order to make new proteins (Lions Talk Science, 2015). Proteins have several cellular functions; such as, altering rates of metabolic reactions with the presence of enzymes, movement of materials in cells or body with hemoglobin, they are also structural proteins like keratin, helps blood clotting with fibrin, and make up bones, skin, tendons, ligaments with collagen. In contrast, fats and carbohydrates, which are chiefly composed of carbon and hydrogen, all proteins consists of nitrogen.
