Analysis Of The Song Kevin By Macklemore

A. My inspiration for my research topic comes partially from a Macklemore song called Kevin. This song is about a 21-year-old named Kevin who passed away due to an overdose of oxycontin. I had an emotional response to this song’s sad, yet powerful message. Most importantly, I was intrigued by the questions posed by this song. Are prescribed medications worth taking? Do the rewards outweigh the risks? Macklemore’s opinion that America is overprescribed is obvious through the song. He discusses issues such as corruption of pharmacy companies, addiction, and dependence. This inspired me to investigate both sides of the argument to form my own opinion.

If the overprescription of psychiatric drugs continues, the next generation is in grave danger. In fact, many of children are prescribed with medications for illnesses they do not have. Sometimes, behavioral issues in children are seen as having a mental disorder. Therefore, some children with behavioral issues are prescribed with medication for illnesses they do not have. Jeffrey Lieberman, M.D., the chairman of the psychiatry department at Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons, addresses this problem in an interview. He explains “anti-psychotic drugs are indicated, principally, to treat psychotic disorders like schizophrenia, and schizophrenia occurs fairly rarely in children and adolescents. So these medicines are being used, not to treat this primary illness, but to treat a wide range of disorders that involve behavioral discontrol or disruptive and difficult behaviors” (Lieberman). It is harmful to these children to take these powerful medications that are primarily intended to treat mental disorders that they don’t have. Lieberman attributes this problem to society’s outlook saying “parents, schools, society is encouraging disruptive and disobedient behaviors to be treated to the extent that there is a scientific basis for providing treatment” (Lieberman). The idea that the community is partially responsible for this problem shows that the community must change. Instead of yearning to use all different kinds of medications, the community should …show more content…
I would say that my work habits are fairly similar to a typical high schooler. I do tend to procrastinate, but on bigger assignments, I try not to. Usually, I do my homework immediately when I get home from school, unless it’s a Friday. On a normal day, I get home around 6 because I have practice for a sport. On days I play games, I get home anywhere from 7-9 depending on if the game is away or if it is extended. Other than that, I don’t have commitments after school. Before school, I sometimes do homework because I enjoy waking up early. However, I don’t accomplish a lot of homework in the mornings because I have to be at school at 7. I spend a lot of time on homework during the week because I dislike doing homework during the weekend. Saturdays, I work from 8-2. Sundays, I work from 12-5. Work is my only consistent commitment during the weekend. Everything else that I do during the weekend is flexible, so if I need to do homework I can make time. I would say that I am reliable. I am willing to put in time to research and write. My biggest weakness would be that I am a very slow worker. I feel like I’m good at collaborating with people because I compromise

Most kids have sports practices or other types of extracurricular activities to do after school. If kids have practice on a night they have homework, it will be difficult for them to make time to do it or be focused on it. Maintaining good health is important for young people and they have to be involved in physical activities so they do not become over weight. After they get home from practice, it is time to take a bath and get ready for bed so they will be able to get up for another day of school in the morning. This leaves a child no time to do homework unless they stay up late to make sure they finish but, then they will just be tired for school they next day and might do poorly in the classroom.…

Everyday after school I go to work and some days I have to go to both my jobs right after each other, then at ten o'clock at night start my homework. I keep myself very busy so saying blondes are spoiled and get whatever they want is an understatement. Number two: all blondes are lazy? WRONG!! This goes along with number three, but every day after work you'll see me at the gym for about one to two hours a day before going home to do homework because I know all my teahers will closely look over my howmework because that's a misconception about teahers.…

High schoolers have lives outside of school and seven teachers that give homework. A lot of the homework that is given seems like busy work. Homework that is actually helpful and is practice to what is being taught, is good, but an overload of homework is not okay. A lot of High Schoolers have jobs outside of high school, or sports, or family things that come before school. Some students don’t have a lot of time to do all their homework, which affects their grade, or it leaves no time for any activities because they are so busy trying to finish their pile of homework.…

Kay Redfield Jamison, a professor of psychiatry at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine, points out that an excess of stress from life may appear to be the reason people attempt suicide; people from the outside looking in seem to think that those who take their own lives just couldn’t handle certain situations they were in (Jamison, 2014). Jamison refutes this idea and states, “certainly, stress is important and often interacts dangerously with depression. But the most important risk factor for suicide is mental illness, especially depression or bipolar disorder” (Jamison, 2014). All too often these diseases are dismissed for bad days and are told to be remedied with a better attitude. Shouldn’t we expect more then petty…

Because I live with my boyfriend I obsessively clean and I also go to work about four times a week. When I work I get home at eleven and I usually don’t have the time or energy to do homework. Something that I can do to fix this problem would be to know that I can do it and do all of my homework right after school. Not feeling so overwhelmed all the time would also be helpful because feeling so nervous and stressed all the time only slows me down. Another big problem that makes me procrastinate a lot is when I tell myself I'm going to do it later.…

The average person needs to get 6-8 hours of sleep every night. After school, I attend softball practices and away games that sometimes cause my team and I to get home around 11:00 pm. Also, to mention homework and studying; not every kid gets the time to finish classwork sent home, or have time to study for their classes. Throughout this year my grades have become low, because of not having time to finish homework or sent home projects. Later arrival time would even decrease the amount of teens that fall asleep during classes.…

Prepping helps alleviate a lot of the stress during the workweek. Having such a busy schedule means I only have the weekends, and a small amount of time during the week, to get homework done. In order for me to complete school assignments and study, it is crucial that I plan it into my weekends. This makes it difficult to find any time to relax or socialize with friends and family. Even when I do find some free time on the weekends, it always seems to be someone’s birthday or…
