The Machu Picchu citadel was built for the Inca aristocracy. Machu means ancient and Picchu means mountain so it translates to Ancient mountain. The Inca built it 2,430 meters above sea level. It sits in the middle of a rainforest in a very beautiful area. The architecture is very impressive even after centuries. The arches where doorways where it took a lot of ingenuity to build without modern technology. Machu Picchu is right in the center of where the Peruvian andes and the Amazon Basin. Machu Picchu is relatively in the south eastern area of Peru, its exact location is 13.1631 s 72.5450 w. There is about 200 structures amongst the citadel that are not too damaged. May through September is the dry season which is the best time to go. You would want to stop in Cusco it is the closest town to Machu Picchu. Cusco was once the capital of the Inca empire, and is now a massive city. The hotel/lodging is pretty affordable. Machu Picchu was constructed 1300 AD then was abandoned in the 16th century. Machu Picchu was ruled by Tahuantinsuyo in 1438 to 1471. The origin of Machu Picchu is based on gods that wanted to challenge the ruler’s building potential. Built as a hidden safehold for the Elite Inca built 80 miles outside of Cusco. It was built with a narrow hidden entrance to throw off anyone who tried to enter. Surrounded by steep cliffs this fortress was nearly impossible to enter undetected. In 2015 The Peruvian Ministry of culture looked to see how many people could access Machu Picchu at one time without damaging the site there is only 2,500 people in Machu Picchu in per day.
