Machu Picchu is located high in the Peruvian Andes. It is situated at 2,430 m above sea-level, in the middle of a tropical mountain forest. The City was discovered in 1911 by Hiram Bingham, the American Yale professor. Bingham arrived in Peru with a small team of explorers hoping to find Vilcabamba, the last Inca stronghold to fall to the Spanish. His team started their expedition in Cuzsco, where they heard about some ruins located on a nearby mountain. The locals called the mountain Mcu Picchu, whihc means “old peak”. …show more content…
Machu Picchu is believed to have been built by the ninth ruler of the Inca, Pachacuti Inca Yupanqui. It was abandoned circa 100 years after the construction, presumably around the time the Spanish conquistadors started ruling over the pre-Columbian nations in the 16th century, although there is no evidence that they ever attacked. Historians believe that is possible that most of its inhabitants died from smallpox epidemic. Machu Picchu is one of the Inca's best kept secrets. It remained secret for more than 400 years.
