Have you ever wondered about a city in the clouds? Ever dreamed of discovering ancient artifacts in a hidden tomb? There is a place on the ridge between the Huayna Picchu and Machu Picchu mountains in Peru that fits the description of those two questions. A mysterious place abandoned by an ancient people of little knowledge. This place is the city of Machu Picchu. After informing you of it’s a closer look at its history, people, and importance, I hope that maybe it will seem a little less mysterious. Most of the knowledge about Machu Picchu has come after it’s discovery in 1911, but we do have some information about the city from before it was revealed to the world. When Machu Picchu was built, the Inca emperor was Pachacuti, “Pachacuti ordered Machu Picchu to be built to celebrate the defeat of a rival tribe, the Chancas,” says Catie-Watie123, “Pachacuti means 'earth shaker'.” He died in 1471, shortly after the end of the construction of the great city. “The Inca first appeared in the Andes region during the 12th century A.D. and gradually built a massive kingdom through the military strength of their emperors,” states a writer from history.com. “Despite their power, the Inca were quickly overwhelmed by the diseases and superior weaponry of Spanish invaders, the last bastion of their immense empire overtaken in 1572.” Machu Picchu was discovered by the American Hiram Bingham III in 1911. Hiram was a United States Senator from Connecticut.
