Machiavelli's Approach To Leadership Analysis

Leadership is about positively influencing others through living by example. When it comes to Machiavelli’s approach to leadership as it relates to school leadership, there are some positive implications of adopting his style of leadership while running a school. A leader is able to channel the dynamism of people to work towards a common goal while putting self – interest and goals to the back burner. Machiavelli’s approach to leadership would allow a principal to change the way the educational system is run. His approach is more about having the right amount of control and power over the decisions being made and the people. Machiavelli sees successful leader as one that seeks – “fame and greatness by governing well…” (1992). This way of thinking …show more content…
It can have a negative affect on a staff in a school because the school leader would be in control. Machiavelli approach to leadership to some may come off as cold and calculated. As it was explained in the book, The Prince, the priority of the leader is to keep security of the enterprise regardless of the morality of the means, (1992). It was also explained by Machiavelli that, a wise prince must find a way to ensure that his citizens are always dependent on his authority. Thus, they will always remain loyal, (1992). Meaning that even if it is not genuine or a true act of honesty, a leader may have to lie, cheat, or kill to maintain order and control. In a school, more often than none, many teachers and staff members will not response to this form of leadership. Many will argue that a school leaders source of power rests in the knowledge that he/she bring to the table in order to create a productive school climate that allows them a chance to reflect and become better as educators not in his or her ability to get people/teachers to always depend on …show more content…
No matter if you are a manager, activist, president of a country, CEO, principal, or teacher, leadership can be seen as a dangerous position to be in. According to Martin Linsky and Ronald A. Heifetz, authors of the book, Leadership on the line: Staying alive through the dangers of leading, “being in a position to lead others is a dangerous situation to be in at times,” (2002). In their experiences with leadership, Linsky and Heifetz offered advice to us as leaders on how to deal with the challenges and the pitfalls when it comes to leading. They discussed this notion of technical problems versus adaptive challenges. According to Linsky and Heifetz, in leadership sometimes, problems that can be solved with available know-how information and procedures are known as technical, (2002). But there are others problems that cannot be solve with reliable expertise or standard procedures and those problems are known as adaptive challenges, (2002). As a future leader myself, I agree with Linsky and Heifetz about how leaders get caught up in trying to solve the more technical problems that they forget that the adaptive challenges are the problems that will lead to the failure and the execution of a

Teachers need to believe that the principal has their best interest at heart. Teachers also need to feel that the principal is dependable and has the necessary skills and knowledge to lead the school. “One of the hallmarks of effective principals is how they treat people. Like effective teachers, effective principals treat people with respect,” (Whitaker, 2009). No matter what wonderful programs, textbooks, and activities are established in a school, the success of the school and essentially the students will depend on the relationships, both internal and external, among the stakeholders.…

Comparison of leaders Lao-tzu writes “throw away morality and Justice, and people will do the right thing.” ; this is Lao-tzu’s core belief that if left to their own devices humans will do the right thing. This notion of human good is in stark comparison to Machiavelli's cynical view of society. Although these texts were written nearly two thousand years apart and in different hemispheres, both authors reflect on common themes such as human nature, leadership, and War. Even though their themes are common these authors come to opposing radically conclusions.…

The result is new influence on the culture of the organization. Great leaders are willing to challenge the status quo while trusting and empowering their people. Not only do leaders use obstacles to create a positive future, they are willing to set an example of sacrifice for the good of the next generation”. (Banutu-Gomez, M. B. & Banutu-Gomez S. M. As an Italian diplomat, Machiavelli's views of leadership such as it being "much safer to be feared than loved"(79) seems contrary to the way many Americans view leaders, since many of his views go against what people see in a leader. Born in Florence, Italy, Niccolò Machiavelli was jailed whenever the Medici family acquired power in 1512("Niccolò..."). During this time, he wrote one of most famous works, The Prince, teaching his views of how to acquire and maintain their kingdom. Many of Machiavelli philosophies on how to lead may sound cold-hearted and cruel, but much of it is used by influential leaders, who have shaped our views of successful leadership skills. If we look closely, American president, Grant, and dictator, Musharraf, have…

In The Servant, the two components mentioned when discussing the dynamics of leadership are the task and the relationship. (2012, p. 40) Having a special connection and relationship with the faculty and staff must be accomplished before the principal can earn their respect and build authority or gain influence with them. In addition, to get the staff of a school on board and supporting his vision for the school, the school leader, or principal, must have established a solid and trusting relationship with them. Without relationships, one only has power and an unhealthy work environment.…

In terms of processing the course teachings, I found the Handbook for Transformative Learning difficult to retain at times. Although this is a topic of great interest to me and the current context in which I serve; the material has often caused me to gravitate more towards The Adaptive Leadership textbook by Heifetz. All things considered, I believe that the development of the Synergy paper actually presents the student and pastoral leaders with a unique opportunity to shape the destiny of the local church and the AME denomination by virtue of two major advantages at their disposal. First, the availability and accessibility of successful nationally recognized experts in the area of Adaptive Leadership and Transformative Learning. Having a full arsenal of proven experts present during our first semester at Payne Theological Seminary caused a hunger in my spirit.…

The principal executed a unique leadership style that incorporated various theoretical applications. One such style observed during school leadership team meetings was the distributive style of leadership. The distributed leadership model, "does not necessarily imply that the entire faculty controls decisions related to the school. Rather, principals create leadership positions that allow capable and willing teachers to work in a more focused leadership capacity" (Giouroukakis & Natsiopoulou, 2010). During school leadership team meetings, the principal included teacher-leaders as part of the decision making team to collaborate and provide input on key decisions that impact student learning.…

The Power of Leadership In every school that exhibits strength, one will see a leader that empowers the staff to achieve their goals. Strong leadership entails one who shares a vision with their staff in order to produce growth for the students. Without a leader, teachers will have to take on many other roles that distract their focus from their daily classroom routines. Furthermore, I believe that a successful school needs a principal to oversee the school culture, provide instructional leadership, and exemplify an understanding of state standards.…
