In “The Prince” he gives advice to as the text says a prince on how he should rule for the best of outcomes. The advice that Machiavelli gives is not all necessarily good advice though, he points out that as a ruler there are some things that you must do without involving moral. “ From this arises the following question: whether it is better to be loved than feared, or the reverse. The answer is that one would like to be both the one and the other; but because it is difficult to combine them, is is far better to be feared than loved if you cannot be both.” (Pg.305) This excerpt from “the convergence of cultures” shows what I was speaking on as far as Machiavelli and some of the advice that he gives to Princes, he would much rather you make people fear you than love you which in the eyes of many is an evil thing. When someone is feared it is of course not because of the good that they have done for people but the evil deeds that they have committed which grants them power out of fear. But this indeed does make sense. If you're ruling and everyone loves you, you would naturally believe that to be a good thing but it can give more incentive for more harm to be done to you as a ruler. Without that fear being instilled into people they may feel that they can do things to disrespect you or harm you. “ 'For since good and evil are opposites, the weakness of evil is shown by establishing the strength of good, and vice versa.'” (pg.88) This is the best approach on how to handle evil because it is in a positive way, you cannot give into evil nor can you simply fear it and not do anything about it but instead you can combat it with good. Doing what is right and helping others, simply being a good person.
