It can have a negative affect on a staff in a school because the school leader would be in control. Machiavelli approach to leadership to some may come off as cold and calculated. As it was explained in the book, The Prince, the priority of the leader is to keep security of the enterprise regardless of the morality of the means, (1992). It was also explained by Machiavelli that, a wise prince must find a way to ensure that his citizens are always dependent on his authority. Thus, they will always remain loyal, (1992). Meaning that even if it is not genuine or a true act of honesty, a leader may have to lie, cheat, or kill to maintain order and control. In a school, more often than none, many teachers and staff members will not response to this form of leadership. No matter if you are a manager, activist, president of a country, CEO, principal, or teacher, leadership can be seen as a dangerous position to be in. According to Martin Linsky and Ronald A. Heifetz, authors of the book, Leadership on the line: Staying alive through the dangers of leading, “being in a position to lead others is a dangerous situation to be in at times,” (2002). In their experiences with leadership, Linsky and Heifetz offered advice to us as leaders on how to deal with the challenges and the pitfalls when it comes to leading. They discussed this notion of technical problems versus adaptive challenges. According to Linsky and Heifetz, in leadership sometimes, problems that can be solved with available know-how information and procedures are known as technical, (2002). But there are others problems that cannot be solve with reliable expertise or standard procedures and those problems are known as adaptive challenges, (2002).
