In “The Prince” Machiavelli outlines how best to attain and maintain political and military power on a grand scale among the various types of principalities. He argues that the ideal ruler, particularly one who is new to the position, should exercise a carefully balanced amalgam of what he refers to as the “five qualities”: compassion, trustworthiness, sympathy, honesty, and religiosity, in addition to calculated cruelty as necessary, and unyielding command over, and self reliance in all matters of state and military.
