By volunteering over sixteen hours at MacGregor Downs Health and Rehabilitation Center I have developed numerous strong bonds with various residents and now view old age in a more positive light. My visitation there covered a variety of tasks such as: one on one visits, decorating, knitting and participating in the veteran’s ceremony. Having the absolute pleasure of interacting with this center’s residents has been both delightful and informative. It is through these interactions that I no longer fear entering old age later in life. Nonetheless, the facility could benefit from small changes to its current operations.
Terry Edwards runs an incredible program with excellent staff as well as fellow volunteers that thoroughly care regarding patient needs and desires. Nevertheless, I firmly believe that extra staff would be beneficial to Ms. Edwards and her team as they often are all immensely busy continuously throughout the day. Added staff would provide each patient with more involved care as well as provide as more interaction for them. Before volunteering at the nursing home growing old seemed terrifying, and undesirable. However, after interacting with the residents I am not as fearful of growing old anymore. Mainly due to the fact that residents at this center still life active lives by attending different activities, visiting other residents and interacting with volunteers as well as staff. Maintaining this active lifestyle promotes brain activity and aids in retaining many significant mental capabilities. For example, numerous residents became aware of my schedule because I volunteered on the same day each week and when I skipped a week I was shocked that when I returned a few had noticed my
