Lady Macbeth embodied the role of a strong woman who appears to be equal or even superior to her husband Macbeth. Lady Macbeth’s ruthlessness and desire for the spirits to unsex her emphasises her desire to be equal or superior to her husband and this superiority is later underscored when she calls upon the darkest night and orchestrates King Duncan’s murder. However, the psychological toll of Duncan’s murder causes Lady Macbeth to slowly begin regretting her actions and to second guess herself. Thus causing her to change from an imposing figure to a weak willed character, which Macbeth subconsciously recognizes and exploits in order to become the dominant partner in the relationship. This swap in roles is illuded to when Macbeth refused to let Lady Macbeth in on Banquo’s murder and instead states, “Be innocent of the knowledge, dearest chuck” (Act 3, sc. 3, line 51). After the swap in roles, Lady Macbeth’s health and mental state rapidly spirals downhill; driven mad by guilt and fear of discovery causes Lady Macbeth to experience sleep walking, unwellness, and ultimately causes her to take her own life through violent means. Macbeth’s introduction establishes a loyal, honorable, and respectable thane and warrior. After Macbeth acquires the title of Thane of Cawdor and learns he will become King of Scotland, Macbeth’s personality, fueled by ambition and promises, begins to change and he dabbles with the idea of murdering the king. Then when he and his conniving wife manage to succeed with their wicked plan, his status officially changes to King of Scotland. Since Macbeth received kingship through backhanded ways, the kingdom, nature, and Macbeth’s personality spiraled into chaos. Unnatural things such as royal horses eating each other and owls killing hawks transpires in the disturbed kingdom and Macbeth morfis into a dominate, power hungry king who slaughters his best friends and the innocent wife, children, and servants of Macduff. MacBeth’s manifestation into a tyrant produces concern from fellow thanes and eventually leads to Macbeth’s death. Macbeth’s change in status from a honorable thane to a respectable king to a ruthless tyrant and eventual death occurs because of Shakespeare's ideas and values.
