Macbeth is the main character in the play, Macbeth, by William Shakespeare. In the beginning, he is described as a strong, brave, and admired character. He is very loyal to King Duncan, and the King considers him to be a dear friend. However, as we delve deeper into the story we learn that he is a character driven by temptation and desire to be the King. As his temptation grows we begin to see just who his character really is.
We first hear about Macbeth through the wounded sergeant, who is talking to the King and his sons.The sergeant describes how the brave Macbeth fought and defeated the traitor Macdonwald. The King proclaims Macbeth to be a valiant cousin and a worthy gentlemen. The way he is spoken about by the King and the sergeant, shows him as being an admired and loyal fighter. This is further shown when King Duncan declares he will promote Macbeth to the thane of Cawdor. When we later meet Macbeth for the first time, he is walking back from the battlefield with his friend, Banquo. On their way to the King's court, they run into the three witches. Macbeth begins to wonder whether or not he will descend to the throne peacefully, or if he will have to commit a terrible act to get there. This thought alone proves that he may not be as good-hearted as the others have described him. When the King announces that his son, Malcolm, will become the heir to the throne, Macbeth is very distressed. While he appears to be happy in front of the King, he secretly feels as though Malcolm is someone who is now in his way of becoming King. This shows just how quickly his temptation and desire, over becoming King, has grown. After he tells his wife of the witches prophecy, she immediately begins to devise a plan to murder the King. It is during this time that we see how influenced he is by Lady
