In the txt the duel goes offstage while it is in progress, and MacDuff returns to the winner. In the Polanski version the duel works it's way up a staircase, Macduff, fighting from below, gets the upper hand and stabs his sword up under MacBeth's breast-plate and the audience gets to see the point emerge from the opposite shoulder between collar-bone and neck. MacBeth falls down onto the landing of the staircase, and the audience again gets a front-row seat as MacDuff beheads him, his head falling to the ground and rolling towards the camera.
The opening scenes of the film establish a strong connection with the audience in terms introducing the characters, the plot, and the context in which the film was set and directed.
The film is set in medieval times, in approximately the fifteenth century. The violence and brutality displayed in the climax help to emphasise the uncivilised and dark period in which the film is set. The setting and the supernatural idea that relate to the climax similarly display such context.
