To his knowledge the Thane of Cawdor was alive and well, and Macbeth could not become King without being the Thane of Cawdor. Macbeth soon told his wife of the witches’ prophecy. The conclusion Lady Macbeth comes to is that she and her husband must do anything necessary for Macbeth to obtain the foretold royal position. In the beginning Macbeth was a brave and honorable man. When the original Thane of Cawdor was executed for treason. King Duncan called on Macbeth to move up in positions and fill the place of Thane of Cawdor. The King calls upon Macbeth because he trusted him. Duncan had trusted the previous Thane until he commited treason, this betrayal made it all the more important to pick a new Thane that could be trusted. “What he hath lost, noble Macbeth hath won.” Is what the King says regarding the situation. Multiple times, King Duncan made it known how he trusted Macbeth and at this time his trust in Macbeth was just. Macbeth had proven himself a loyal Thane and had pleased the King. A desire for something big is typically in one’s mind for an extended period of time. Now this desire may not be made prevalent or actually announced until an event encourages it. This is what happened to Macbeth. Lots of people desire power or importance and this is what Macbeth wanted. This is a normal, carnal desire and what better way to be in a power position than to be king. So Macbeth had likely all along desired to be King, but he had never admitted or announced this ambition. His desire was never made apparent until a certain event made it so, and this event was Macbeth’s first encounter with the witches. Hearing it, knowing that he would be made King made his desires seem like an attainable thing. The prospect of becoming king was no longer a silly dream it was something that was going to happen so Macbeth became willing to do anything to make sure it
