A successful leader is one that brings prosperity to a region while upkeeping good morals. They must seek to better the state of the region and keep the interests of the people in mind. Two works of literature that illustrate this theme of what makes a good leader are The Prince by Niccolo Machiavelli and Macbeth by William Shakespeare. In The Prince, Machiavelli uses rulers of past and present to illustrate qualities necessary in a good leader. In Macbeth, Macbeth, a valiant war hero, becomes king of Scotland through immoral means and suffers greatly due to his unchecked ambition. Using the blueprint laid out by Machiavelli in The Prince, the conclusion that Macbeth does not illustrate qualities needed to be a successful prince can be reached. …show more content…
He often acts rashly, without thinking of the repercussions of his actions. Machiavelli also states that a good prince must “be a fox to discover the snares and a lion to terrify the wolves.” (Machiavelli 18) Macbeth is neither; he allows himself to get caught up in the Witches’ snare and is terrified by the biggest wolf of all: the threat of losing power. To survive and prosper, a ruler must be skilled at deception or he’ll be easily deceived by those who only carry their own interests at heart. Macbeth is too easily controlled by the people around him, especially the women. He allows the words and actions of Lady Macbeth and the Witches to control his rule. The Witches prophesy that Macbeth will be king of Scotland. This prompts him to inform his wife, Lady Macbeth, who convinces him that the only method of action is to kill King Duncan. His death will make Macbeth king. Macbeth chooses to tell Lady Macbeth about the Witches’ prophesy and she is the catalyst for Duncan’s murder. Since she is the dominant force in their relationship, he often relies on her to make the decisions and this dynamic is why he fully believes that the only way to obtain power is by killing

Macbeth and Scar from The Lion King are similar because in the beginning of Macbeth, King Duncan’s death is planned when Macbeth is told by the three witches that he can claim the throne if Duncan passes away before Malcolm becomes old enough to rule. Macbeth and Lady Macbeth both plan the murder of King Duncan. After King Duncan is pronounced dead his son fleas out of town worrying that he might be next on the list. The Lion King was supposed to be based off of Hamlet in the first place but somehow seems to make more sense when comparing it to Macbeth, for insistence, in The Lion King we have Scar (who is playing Macbeth) who wants to get rid of Mufasa because he wants to take over the Pride Land with the help of the hyenas (who are playing the three witches) before Simba turns old enough to take over. So Scar murders Mufasa and talks…

The characters in Macbeth all possess their own unique attributes that are easily detected within their demeanor. Macbeth has an alternative side to him that is not exposed to the other characters. He keeps hidden and his selfishness is only identifiable when he lets it slip out. His vicious attitude and lack of confidence are introduced to the audience, but never to other characters. The audience is privy to Macbeth’s true self through his soliloquies; when he becomes greedy, violent, and as he reveals his insecurities.…

Honor, loyalty, and trustworthiness are qualities difficult to maintain, especially when outside influence, mixed with free will is involved. Manipulation, the skillful art of controlling another’s actions, is the key agent in the progression of the play, Macbeth, by William Shakespeare. Influenced and manipulated by both the witches and his wife, Macbeth allows any good qualities attained in the past to vanish in his own corruption with the help of his free will. Macbeth, in the beginning of the play, is seen as one of the most loyal followers to the King of Scotland, Duncan.…

Shakespeare’s play Macbeth, written nearly a century after Niccolo Machiavelli’s The Prince, is a companion to the work in regard to its treatment of the topics of ambition and power. The relationship between the two works, however, is more complicated than a simple critique or homage. While Shakespeare does seem critical in his portrayal of some aspects of Machiavelli’s principles, his play is not completely ironic in its message; in fact, the ultimate warning of Macbeth seems to be exactly in line with that of The Prince.…

Sharing his plan with Lady Macbeth, the would-be queen, shows he hoped “it would find welcome lodgement with her,” and she would encourage his greed for more power (Flathe 2). Realizing it is against his morals, Macbeth tries to back out of the murder plan but he is “charged with cowardice” by Lady Macbeth (Richardson 1). She scolds him for being too frightened to achieve his goal to become king and not being “the same in thine own act and valor as thou art in desire” (1.7.40-41). This accusation spurs his ambition and his greed, so he murders Duncan, knowing the prophecies are on his side. By committing this crime, Macbeth destroys a bond with a parent-like figure and violates the “powers of [his] own superego, or conscience” (Reid 5).…

Lord of Macbeth Even though both Jack from Lord of the Flies, and Macbeth from Macbeth have the same drive for power, the same obsession with blood, and the same guilt, there are some differences. The differences between them is that Macbeth does everything because he thinks it’s his fate and that he needs to, but Jack does it for the thrill of it. In both Macbeth, and Lord of the Flies the author is trying to show that greed kills all. In both novels the drive to be the leader results in either the death of himself, or the death of others. Both Macbeth and Jack could have lead peacefully, but their fear of not having power led to their eventual downfall.…

William Shakespeare is known for writing some of the most profound tragedies of all time, including Romeo and Juliet and Macbeth, two of the most famous plays. When an audience is watching these dramas, they see how horrific events can happen to people who seem completely moral, which begs the following question: what leads to these tragedies? One can easily blame the individual imperfections of the characters, but every tragedy in Shakespeare’s canon shares a greater overarching warning. Shakespeare’s tragic dramas Romeo and Juliet and Macbeth show the audience that tragedy does not always emerge from disobedience or manipulation, but rather authority and power. Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet famously ends with both of the titular characters…
