Not only does the king regard them as equals but the supernatural elements who play a crucial role in the play make prophesies for both of them; Macbeth to be the king and Banquo to be the father of many kings. The contrast between these two great soldiers is brought to light by each one’s response to the prophecy. Banquo is more honourable than Macbeth which Shakespeare clearly outlines in more than one instance. For example, the witches say "Lesser than Macbeth, and greater" and "Not so happy, yet much happier". These words of the witches point out that Banquo is a better person than Macbeth is.
Macbeth embarks on journey on evil path fuelled by his thirst of power and commits a string of murders including his king, his friend, and some innocent people to achieve his goal. Banquo on the other hand tries to save Macbeth by pointing out the obvious truth about the witches and later in the play stating that he will accept the honors without forfeiting any of his own.

Why, by verities on thee made good,
May thee not be my oracles as well
