The majority of people with dreams and ambition help to fuel the progressive society we live in. From the influences of public figures such as Benjamin Franklin and Ross Perot, our world has made tremendous headway. However the persistence that accompanies this type of passionate drive can also lead to undesirable outcomes. Through his tragic play, William Shakespeare uses social and political aspects in Macbeth to sufficiently portray that strong, ambitious desires can lead to a destructive abandonment of basic human morals.
Throughout the beginning of the play, Macbeth shows no hesitation when it comes to upholding his societal image. People often boast him with significant praise, calling him “noble Macbeth” and describing his perseverance as “ [A] cannon overcharged with double cracks” (1.2.37). When Lady Macbeth receives word of her husband’s prophecy she immediately jumps on board. Right away, she starts asking the spirits to “unsex her” and fill her from “crown… to toe” with the “direst cruelty”(1.5.43). She shows not the slightest tendency whatsoever for human morals. She soon takes her mentality and bestows it upon Macbeth. While approaching the time of the murder, Macbeth grabs a hold once again to his morality realizing that the king “hath honored [him] of late” and tells his wife that they will “proceed no further”(1.7.32). Just when we think Macbeth has come to his senses, Lady Macbeth persuades him otherwise. She accuses him of being less of a man and asks him if he intends on being “a coward… like the poor cat”, and she isn’t talking about the common house pet either(1.7.43).
