They referred themselves as the “weird sisters”. In those days witches are considered ugly evil creatures who are capable of telling the future. Also part of the reason why there are witches in this play is because Shakespeare was trying to please King James with his work. King James was a big fan of superstition and witches, so bringing in the witches would definitely seemed more appealing to King James. Witches are important because they are the ones who made the prophecies that leads to the tragic of Macbeth. From Act 1 Scene 3 when Banquo first met the three witches he said to them “You should be women, and yet your beards forbid me to interpret that you are so.” The reason why the witches have beards is because back in that era woman did not performed in theaters. Man had to replace all female roles. Also the witches pursued the same mysterious potion making as all stereotypical witches do. This can be shown in Act 4 Scene 1, witches were chanting “Double, double, toil and trouble..” while making a pot of potion. They are also evil from reading Act 1 Scene 3, getting the information that one of the witches asked a woman for a chestnut but got refused, then she went to that woman’s husband, who was sailing on a ship at the time, then cursed him and made sure his journey was miserable. In Act 5 Scene 1, the doctor said to the maid: “This woman needs a priest more than a doctor. God forgive us all! ” Because the doctor did not have the knowledge to treat Lady Macbeth except to say that she need to confess to a priest. Compare to nowadays, psychologists and doctors can handle these situations well. A patient like Lady Macbeth can be prescribed to antidepressants and sleeping pills by her GP, and also get treatment sessions with a psychologist or a therapist for releasing her problems, stress and guilt. They were the main cause for her mental issues. However if she did live in the modern days she wouldn’t be confessing because she would be in jail for her sins.
The term “god”, “heaven” and “hell” are mentioned several times in “Macbeth”. It is believed by Macbeth and Lady Macbeth that after people die, they either get sent to heaven, or hell. This is shown in the quote: “I go, and it is done; the bell invites me. Hear it not, Duncan, for it is a knell that summons thee to heaven or to hell.” This quote was being said before he killed Duncan, telling him that he will either be sent to heaven or
