Shakespeare’s Selfish and Loyal Men
In the Shakespeare tragic play Macbeth, the characters illustrate the importance of having power. Through the eyes of Macduff and Macbeth, there are great qualities that are shown through them. They both have a drive for power and bravery but want to make sure that it does not go unnoticed. Without control, characters Macduff and Macbeth are not able to take over their land or fight for what they want. Even though they are men seeking control, they go through obstacles throughout the play, which shines a light on their characteristics. Macbeth and Macduff are men that committed the crime of manslaughter. Even though they both had different intentions behind their actions, it expounds the idea that their minds work differently. Macbeth kills Duncan out of his own pleasure and for his own being. He wanted to look better among others, which shows that he is selfish and greedy. While he killed for his own self, Macduff on the other hand killed Macbeth because of the death of his family and to save his country from Macbeth’s rule. Because he killed for revenge and for the sake of his country, it shows that Macduff has better characteristics than Macbeth because he was not being selfish; rather he was doing it out of respect of his family. The fact that Macbeth kills for his own desire makes it seem as though he does not care about others, which are not qualities of a king. Sadly, this makes Macbeth look bad in comparison to Macduff. While Macbeth thought of how things will benefit him such as the wealth and power, he did not take the responsibility to worry about the people he was affecting. Therefore, Macduff seems more loyal to his people by putting them first and assuring that the right things are being done.
