MacBeth Motif Essay
The timeless play “MacBeth” by William Shakespeare is an extremely thorough and well thought out play. Throughout the play, there are many recurring ideas, called motifs. There are many motifs, but one of the most prevalent and important motifs in the play is Death. Throughout Macbeth, there are several instances where a person is murdered or, the characters are speaking about death. The motif of Death will help all readers understand Macbeth better, because the play is about murder. The tragedy includes killing of a kings, and even whole families. Death comes in many ways in Macbeth, by “natural” causes, and by the hand of another person. Nevertheless, without death, there would be no Macbeth. Understanding the motif of death in Macbeth is so important, and impact of it in the play is so great, that without it, the story would be completely different, therefore, death helps the reader understand Macbeth by making the reader comprehend how the characters developed, how the characters personalities were, and even how the individual roles characters role meant something.
Character development is very important in any book, movie, or play. In Macbeth, there are many instances where a character makes a big change in the way they think and how they act, and most of them were because of death. One example is Macbeth, who started of as the loyal, loveable, warrior who helped bring Scotland to victory many times, but knowing of the death of Duncan and how it would happen changed the way he acted, and ultimately led to him killing multiple people and even getting himself killed. A majority of the characters in the end of the play either died, or killed someone, which helped the play end the way it did. Each character had a certain role in the play, and this role had to do with death in some way. Macbeth, the main character, killed many people throughout the play, and even died at the end of the play. Lady Macbeth, who convinces her husband to kill people, died at the end of the play. King Duncan died, Banquo died, Macduff killed someone, and so on. Each person who was connected to death in some way made in impact on how the play ended, Duncan’s death made Macbeth became king, Banquo’s death gave Macbeth a little bit of hope for the future, and Macduff killing Macbeth ended the story, and ending his treachery. Every person was connected with death, and this helped the audience understand Macbeth because it makes the play, without Death, there would be no Macbeth, therefore, there would be nothing to understand. Also, it also helped the audience understand the individual role or point in being of each character in the play and how they meant something in the
