Macbeth Is A Villain Or Villain? Essay

Due to various circumstances, Macbeth is seen as a villain because he kills people in Shakespeare’s play, “Macbeth”. Although Macbeth’s actions are villainous, he is not a true villain himself, instead he blinded by his ambition. He has admirable qualities, a conscience and he is a victim of manipulation.

Macbeth shows that he has a conscience and this proves that he is a good person. Macbeth says “I am in blood / stepp’d in so far that should I wade no more/ returning were as tedious as go o’er,”(3.5.67-9), shortly after he sees Banquo’s ghost who calls out Macbeth for being a criminal, which makes him feel guilty. He realises that instead of being a brave, strong man, he is a murderer. He cannot believe he killed Banquo and regrets it immediately. This quote shows that Macbeth wants to go back in time when his conscience is clear but he has “stepped so far in” that he cannot free himself of the guilt he feels. Another example of Macbeth of having a conscience and showing his remorse is shown in the quote, “I’ll go no more: /I am afraid to think what I have done; / Look on ’t again I dare not.” (2.2.51-3). This is said when he comes back with the daggers covered in blood. He refused to go back and place them with the now dead Duncan, because he has become aware that he actually killed him. He keeps hearing repeated voices saying “Sleep no more! / Macbeth does murder sleep,” (2.2.35-6) which is showing his conscience isn’t clear and that he is upset by his own actions…
