An Adaption Gone Tragically Wrong From ancient times, tragedy has been a key element in successful plays. However, many movie adaptations of these plays have so many added changes and elements that take away from this tragedy that the viewer should feel. This same effect is in the movie adaptation of Shakespeare 's play Macbeth. The director however is unsuccessful in making the viewer sympathize for Macbeth like a true tragedy should. The play Macbeth, by William Shakespeare, makes the audience sympathize more for Macbeth than Rupert Goold 's version of it because of the character development, themes, and the plot.…

Orson Welles' version of “Macbeth” was his first attempt of creating a cinematic adaptation of a Shakespearean play and it turned out to be a very expressionist and visually creative version. The movie was produced quickly and cheaply and the play is set within a wasteland, surrounded by nothing but stones and fog, where we can only see the features of the play's characters, who shout their tormented speeches while being soaked into hell, which awaits them for their evil deeds. Welles stays close to the original script of “Macbeth”, with only minor shifts of words and characters. He seems to put emphasis on the religious subtext of the plot, but nevertheless he remains true to the original language and story: Macbeth (played by Welles himself) decides to murder king Duncan (Erskine Sanford), because of the prophecy the three witches gave him, and is further encouraged by his wife, Lady Macbeth (Jeanette Nolan). After receiving the crown and becoming the new king of Scotland, Macbeth is driven by madness and paranoia and becomes more and more desperate in defending his title, which causes him to commit more evil deeds.…

Two of Shakespeare’s most famous plays, Macbeth and Hamlet have darkness as a main theme and both show that darkness can drive characters directly to insanity.…

Shakespeare has many recurring themes throughout his works. One particularly noticeable theme is ambition. While it is generally viewed in a positive light within the literary world, the absence of ambition is actually rewarded more than its presence in Shakespearean works. Its nature within the Shakespearean world demonstrates that ambition initially may appear to be harmless or well managed but will always spiral out of control and consume the character’s life because it is a tragic flaw. It is a dominant trait that cannot be contained.…
