In the play Macbeth did Macbeth have free will or was he controlled by fate? Macbeth was a tragedy that had many deaths that took place. Macbeth had lots of free will in the beginning of the play. As the play goes on fate controls Macbeth to make decisions that should’ve not been made. Macbeth is controlled more by fate than free will. First of all, Macbeth was pressured into killing the king of Scotland. Macbeth’s wife was demanding that King Duncan should be killed. In the beginning Macbeth refused to believe in Lady Macbeth’s plan because he said “If chance will have me king, why, chance may crown me Without my stir (I.iv.42-44).” Lady Macbeth was planning to kill him but by the time she was ready she couldn’t kill King Duncan. Before his wife died Macbeth went to get revenge on, Macduff. For the reason why Macbeth wanted revenge on Macduff was that he heard that he went to England and that he was on Malcolm’s side. Macbeth went to war before his wife died and he went and killed Macduff’s wife and son. When he got back, he found out that his wife was dead. Macbeth was sad when Lady Macbeth died. The prophecies that the apparitions predicted, became true. The prophecy Third Apparition said was, “Macbeth shall never vanquished be until Great Birnam Wood to high Dunsinane Hill Shall come against him (IV.i.92-94).” This means that Birnam Wood would come to fight him. This prophecy became true when Macduff and his forces traveled through Birnam Wood to Macbeth’s castle to fight Macbeth. Although some may think that Macbeth was controlled by free will, this is inaccurate because he was controlled by fate.
