Macbeth the main character changes dramatically throughout the book and the author did this to intensify what he is trying to tell us. At the beginning of the story Macbeth is a respected general, a loved husband and a loyal subject of the king. Then Macbeth gets a prophecy from the witches and becomes ambitious. The witches told him that he can be the king of Scotland. Macbeth told Lady Macbeth about this and Lady Macbeth tells Macbeth to do whatever he needs to do to seize the crown and become the king of Scotland. Macbeth finally kills the Scottish king Duncan and becomes the king of Scotland. His ambition to have more power made him commit an inhumane crime. His ambition, guilt and fear makes him commit more inhumane crimes to cover up

Macbeth has a vision of a bloody dagger. "Is this a dagger which I see before me, the handle towards my hand? Come, let me clutch thee." He tried to grasp the dagger but he could not touch it. Macbeth had a vision of a bloody dagger that he could not touch and this shows his ambition to kill Duncan. Macbeth could not grasp the dagger because Macbeth himself knows that murdering Duncan is not the right thing to do but his ambition leads him to kill Duncan and seize the crown and become the King of Scotland. This shows us that Macbeth feels remorse even before he killed Duncan. This also shows us that he knows murdering Duncan to become the King is not the right thing to do. After Macbeth murders Duncan he fears that he might get caught which is why he jumps every time he hears a noise. "How is't with me, when every noise appals me?" This shows that Macbeth's senses are heightened and that he is paranoid. Macbeth does not get punished for this because no one knows about it but he gets paranoid and becomes fearful. This is what Macbeth gets for murdering Duncan. He is anxious and tensed up because he is afraid that he might get caught.
