Due to various circumstances, Macbeth is seen as a villain because he kills people in Shakespeare’s play, “Macbeth”. Although Macbeth’s actions are villainous, he is not a true villain himself, instead he blinded by his ambition. He has admirable qualities, a conscience and he is a victim of manipulation.
Macbeth shows that he has a conscience and this proves that he is a good person. Macbeth says “I am in blood / stepp’d in so far that should I wade no more/ returning were as tedious as go o’er,”(3.5.67-9), shortly after he sees Banquo’s ghost who calls out Macbeth for being a criminal, which makes him feel guilty. After the war is over, the Captain is talking to Malcolm and Duncan about Macbeth’s skills in the war, he says “But all’s too weak/ For brave Macbeth—well he deserves that name,”(1.1.16-20), which is indicating that Macbeth is a brave man. This is referring to when Macbeth kills one of the enemies by splitting him in half from his belly button to his jaw, then hanging his head on the castle wall. Bravery is wonderful quality which is praised. Unlike a villain who is just a coward and wants to hurt people for the fun of it. Also, once all of Macbeth’s soldiers abandon him, he says “Hang out our banners on the outward walls. / The cry is still “They come!” Our castle’s strength / Will laugh a siege to scorn. Here let them lie / Till famine and the ague eat them up.” (5.5.2-4). This basically means that he thinks his castle is very strong and that he will win the war. Having confidence is an admirable quality, you are much happier, have no self-doubt, and have more peace of mind, which a villain would not have. Macbeth is brave and confident, but he is also fearless. This is shown when Macbeth refuses to fight Macduff right after he realizes that the prophecies come true. The prophecy come true when the soldiers made weapons out of the forest, the forest that would move when Macbeth would be defeated.
