Macbeth Bad Ambition Essay

In the play Macbeth by Shakespeare, Macbeth uses ambition for good and bad. He uses very little good ambition and uses a lot of bad ambition. Macbeth uses good ambition for his performance in battle and his reputation. He uses bad ambition to do subsequent actions to secure his throne and to murder Duncan. In Shakespeare’s tragedy, Macbeth uses both good and bad ambition. Bad ambition is used mostly throughout the whole play. Ambition is the desire to do or become something and that you are willing to do anything to get over an obstacle. To start with, Macbeth uses his ambition to protect Duncan. Macbeth is always willing to fight for Duncan, but on the night he killed Duncan, no one expected it to be Macbeth. Macbeth has a reputation of always protecting Duncan’s kingship. After fighting in battle and acquiring the title, thane of Cawdor, everyone is happy and keep speaking about how good he is. Ross said Macbeth “assisted by that most disloyal traitor” (1.2.52). There are some people who are suspicious of Macbeth for being king and acting weirdly whenever they are near him. Macbeth got paranoid over Banquo the most. He was scared because the witches told Macbeth that Banquo’s children and generations down will be king in the future. Banquo has a son, Fleance, who could possibly be king one day. Macbeth does not want to be removed from the throne until he dies. Macbeth spoke to murderers and said “Both of you/ Know Banquo was your enemy” (3.2.13-14).
