At the beginning of the play, Macbeth is portrayed as a magnificent war hero – a saviour. In the second scene we meet a Captain reporting from the battlefield, praising Macbeth; “For brave Macbeth – well he deserves that name(…) Till he fac’d the slave, Which ne’er shook hands, nor bade farewell to him till he unseam’d him from the nave to th’chaps and fix’d his head upon our battlement.” To which Duncan replies, “O valiant cousin, worthy gentleman.” Shakespeare has specifically chosen his words in this section to display Macbeth as he is at his best; a ruthless warrior who would stop at nothing to defend his country. The tragic hero and protagonist of this play is ‘brave Macbeth’ (1.2.16) who, unlike the previous Thane of Cawdor, remains loyal to King Duncan. However, through Shakespeare’s negative portrayal of manhood, which is tied with violence and physical courage, along with ambition and greed, Macbeth changes from a loyal man to one who is overcome with a thirst for power and respect. One aspect of masculinity that Shakespeare explores in Macbeth is the courage to act and the courage to perform violent deeds, in Macbeth’s case, murder. In Shakespeare’s original play, Lady Macbeth is seen trying to convince Macbeth to kill King Duncan, in order to become King of…

I think that a man like Macbeth wouldn't have considered becoming the king of Scotland, and the idea of becoming king was not in his head until the witches mentioned it. I think that Macbeth is a humble character, and without any external influences he wouldn't push to become the king. I think the witches put the idea in his head, and once part of their prediction came true Macbeth convinced himself that it was meant to be. I also think Lady Macbeth has a influence on the decisions he makes. When he was having second thoughts she ignored him and said that this is what he has to do.…

Macbeth is a warrior, and a good one at that. As literary expert and author Richard F. Whalen writes, “Macbeth is essentially a brave and honorable commanding general and combat fighter who is drawn into a disastrous course of action in the corridors of political power” (An Originalist Reading). He is often commended for his success in battle (by the King, no less). In scene four of act one, Duncan tells Macbeth: “The sin of my ingratitude even now / Was heavy on me... More is thy due than more than all can pay” (16-17, 24).…

His bravery in battle and determination against the odds is described early in the play when he leads his men to an unexpected victory, “For brave Macbeth-well he deserves the name- Disdaining fortune, with his brandished steel (1.2.16-17).” He soon demonstrates his psychological spinelessness, unbecoming to a man when he tells his wife that he has decided he will not proceed with Duncan’s murder because his conscious knows it is a terrible deed. She twists manly courage to goad him to action saying, “Wouldst though have that which thou esteem’s the ornament of life, and to live a coward in thine own esteem (1.7.41-43)” Shakespeare uses the expectation of male courage and valor to allow the female to take his power in a deviant shift of masculinity and…
