Appearances vs. Reality in Macbeth What is the truth hiding behind the masks? To the naked eye it may seem normal, but it could all be a lie. On the outside a normal, kind human being, but the inside a monster waits. It will only be a matter of time till everything catches up to the person who hides their real identity. Appearances vs. reality in Macbeth have three main focus points: how sinister Lady Macbeth is in reality, how the guilt is in Macbeth on the outside vs. on the inside, and how the witches seem to want to help, but they actually want to destroy Macbeth. Lady Macbeth seems like an innocent, kind woman. She appears as a loving wife, but to those who know her she is much different. Lady Macbeth wants power and will stop at nothing to achieve it. Behind her façade lays a malicious lady. She convinced an indecisive Macbeth to kill King Duncan. “When you durst do it,” she says, “then you were a man” (1.7.49). She thought Macbeth of a coward, when he finally killed Duncan she thought he would not be strong enough. She said she would have killed Duncan herself but he looked too much like her father. “Things without all remedy, should be without regard: what's done, is done.” (2,8-12). When King Duncan was murdered, Macbeth was flooded with guilt. It ate after him, causing him to be paranoid and unsure of himself. “There’s one did laugh in’s sleep, and one cried. “Murder!”” (2.2.2.) He was slowly losing his sanity. He hid it well at first, but the guilt became too much to bare after he killed Banquo. He started to see his ghost sitting at the dinner table. “Thou canst not say I did it: never shake, thy gory locks at me.” (3.5.0) Macbeth started to act crazy at the dinner party.
