One of the emotions showed in the play of macbeth was fear. In act 2 scene ii, Macbeth fears that he has lost his connection with god after he had committed murder. He had told lady macbeth that he could not “pronounce amen” when he “had most need of blessings”.
Macbeth claims that he could not say the word amen, however in this in this scene he repeats this word 4 times. This may suggest that at the time of prayer (where he states that he could not say the word), God took away the privilege of macbeth closing the prayer, and thought he was not worthy of his blessings for the sin he had committed. When the two servants shouted “god bless us”, macbeth may have had felt too guilty as he would have been lying to god's face. He knew that what he had done was wrong and it was not worthy of prayer.He knew that he didn't deserve the blessings. During the 1600’s, religion was huge part of everybody's daily life. People had believed in the divine rights of king, in what they had believed that the king was chosen by the will of god. Macbeth had not only murdered the king, but went against god’s will. this would have angered the audience as they would have felt that it was hypocritical of Macbeth to disobey god and then ask for his blessings for the sin he had committed.
Macbeth had not only lost connection with god, he had lost connection with his wife. This is the first scene we see that Lady Macbeth could not control Macbeth's feelings. Unlike macbeth, lady macbeth did not mind losing her bond with god. Macbeth appears to blame her as it was Lady Macbeth who had persuaded him to disobey god's will.
