Rewrite of Act 1, Scene 4

Scene opens in a large skating rink. Duncan enters with Lennox, Malcolm, Donalbain, and several servants. Loud music can be heard as they receive their skates from a man behind a counter. They all sit on thin benches to lace up their skates and begin discussing current events.
Duncan: Is the traitor thane dead yet? I've been waiting for my executioners to return for over an hour!
Malcolm: I'm sorry they're not back, Dad. They should know by now that being late exasperates you. But I did talk with the one that killed him. He claimed that Cawdor didn't deny his treachery. Apparently, he died with as much dignity as possible.
Duncan: I put so much faith in him, never knowing his true intentions towards me. I trusted Cawdor as much as I

Lennox, pour me some Diet Coke, with a lemon slice.
Lennox: Here sir.
Duncan: Now on this joyful occasion, I have an announcement. In the presence of those who have paid homage to me, I give my son his rightful title. Malcolm, heir to Scotland, I declare you Prince of Cumberland.
Macbeth look disappointed at first, then forms a malicious plan.

Macbeth: (with sass) Well, I'm no longer needed here, so I guess I'll head home. I should warn my wife that you're visiting later.
Duncan: At least take some cake with you, and don't forget to use your SpeedBall tokens.
Macbeth: You can have them. I will take a piece of that sugar cream pie. (Lennox brings him pie in a plastic container) Well, see you later! (Macbeth exits, scheming)
Duncan: That was strange. (Confused at Macbeth's departure and comments, shakes it off) Malcolm, what will your first official act be?
Malcolm: To beat you to the other side of the rink!
Duncan: You're on! Banquo, tell us when to go.
Scene closes with Duncan and Malcolm ready to defeat each other in the skating race. Everyone is delighted with the state of things.

Malcolm’s speech in the final scene of the play to his noblemen signifies that he has matured into a worthy ruler, signifying the end of Macbeth’s reign of terror on Scotland and the beginning of a new era. Through the coronation of Malcolm as king, this speech represents the theme of power in the play as it is shifted off of Macbeth’s shoulders, onto Malcolms. Since Malcolm has inherited his rightful throne as King of Scotland, his first decision is to reward his colleagues for all they have done to help him, saying that not much time will pass before he evaluates their contributions and repays them for the help. This is unlike Macbeth because Malcolm has already shown characteristics of a humble ruler that actually cares about his citizens.…

Up to act 4, Macbeth has done nothing for his country besides slaying a rebel. On the other hand, Macduff demonstrates qualities of a true leader in his conversation with Malcolm in act 4 scene 3. Malcolm tests him, suggesting Macduff may earn Macbeth’s trust by betraying him and Macduff curtly replies, “I am not treacherous” (4.3.18). In denouncing Macbeth, Macduff provides a deep reflection on governance and resistance of temptation.…

The Captain, who was at the scene of the battle, describes Macbeth with high praise- ‘For brave Macbeth… Like Valour’s minion carved out his passage’ which suggests that Macbeth fights like bravery personified and doesn’t let anything get in his way. When he faced Macdonald, he ‘ne’er shook hands, not bade farewell to him’ showing that he didn’t waste time and knew his job in the battle. Although the fact he ‘unseamed [Macdonald] from the nave to th’chaps’ is supposed to show his bravery in killing Macdonald, it shows Macbeth as a ruthless killer. This creates mixed feelings from the audience because they either feel he is a brave solider or he is a barbaric murderer. From the descriptions of Macbeth from Ross and the Captain, Duncan seems very impressed.…
