Macalester Reflection

Improved Essays
When I first visited Macalester and took in the Community during the Fall Preview Sampler, I could tell that the community was diverse, awake, and educated. I felt like this was a place where dedicated and devoted people came to learn. Growing up in an unconventional family, my background helped me to learn at a young age the value of diversity. As I was bi- racial and born to a white American mother and a Nigerian Father, I associated with three different cultural groups in Minnesota. I had an African Community that I found ancestry within, an American Community in which I found culture and practices , and an African American Community in where I found a subculture of American culture. I learned sensitivity and open-mindedness from these communities …show more content…
As people know more of one thing, their knowledge of other things also increases. Growing up, these experiences gave me a look into only a few different cultures. As I grew older I learned of more cultures, religions thereafter, and found myself traveling to different countries in North Africa, Europe, and even within North America. During my traveling experiences I saw how different experiences helped to shape others and how different cultures had similarities and differences in their fundamentals. I think at Macalester I would find only more people with open minded views, trying to learn more of different peoples and to understand the world around them. Fellow classmates would help each other to develop their worldviews and broaden their horizons. If more people were to have similar experiences, academics would also increase as they would have a new incentive or reason to learn. I would personally be more inclined to study the world and to do something more substantial with my life as I would be aware of all the other opportunities available around the world, only waiting to be sought after. I would define my personal outlook to be more optimistic and

After reading Ta-Nehisi Coates’ Between the World and Me I firmly believe there are many positives and negatives that both challenge and support the Dexter Southfield mission of “Our Best Today, Better Tomorrow”. The challenging factors this book offers include whether Dexter Southfield celebrates is diversity enough and if Dexter Southfield students are able to achieve our mission through focusing their time on what interests them. Not simply going through the motions daily; bored and uninterested with the necessary classroom requirements. Nonetheless, Between the World and Me also reinforces how these requirements enable us to reach and exceed our goals and offer us a solid foundation to go out into the world and make a difference as citizens. We are not afraid to take risks and endeavor outside of our comfort zones.…

In Glenn Loury’s speech, “Is He One of Us? Reflections on Identity and Authenticity” (pp. 489-493), he delivers the 245th Opening Convocation to the students of Brown University. Loury addresses diversity, what role it plays, and the advantages it can bring to people’s lives. His supporting statements are puzzling and his justification falls short of being a well thought-out speech, as one might expect at an Opening Convocation. As his speech progresses, his direction becomes unclear with each new point he brings up.…

Most of the students did not feel like a member of mainstream or were not sure where they fit in. It is important to understand and learn about the African American community and their history. We need to learn how to change our attitudes towards different cultures and become open minded about other cultures. Professor Alexis asked, “ How can we as a society change on how we treat and view African Americans/ minorities?” because African Americans have a long history of not being treated equally and fair how can we make it right? I left with great knowledge on the African American community and left empowered by the words, stories, and knowledge shared by professor Alexis and the students.…

We watched more movies and had more discussions, even if they were not on topic. For example in my psychology class, my teacher told us all about his life when he was in high school and college, and all of his crazy adventures. He taught us many life lessons in that class, and even though I learned nothing about psychology, I can honestly say that it was my favorite class that year. I took his class twice more before I graduated.…

My residential community has had a great impact on me. The community provides an ideal atmosphere to meet a variety of people. Not only does the residential community promote diversity and inclusion, but it has also granted me the unique opportunity of leading in a college atmosphere. After arriving at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, I started spending most of my time in the lobby because my room did not have air conditioning. While in the lobby, I met a racially and geographically diverse group of people.…

Although I have lived in rural Northeastern North Carolina for my entire life, I have had the opportunity to visit such places as Alaska, the Bahamas, Hawaii, and several other states up and down the east coast. Experiencing the different cultures, socializing with people with different ideas and customs, and listening to different points of view, were the most exciting aspects of those visits. Expanding my understanding of different perspectives and the exploring of different ideas with the diverse community at NC State is a goal I hope to…

I came to Carroll University understanding my own culture, but not really anyone else's culture. I have some understanding from the foreign exchange students who attended my high school. When you live in a small town with very little diversity, the rest of the world seems so far away. The world seemed like an idea, not something I could go out and see. I enjoyed knowing who my neighbors were, but living in such a small town limits your ability to learn about other cultures.…

Finally, I have been raised to see diversity as a basic strength of our nation. I believe that the future of positive diversity within our country is at a cross roads as another presidential election approaches. Before this course had initiated I measured myself as a person who was conscious of diversity and embraced the term. To my dismay I soon apprehended that I was not as open-minded as I had presumed that I was. Although, I had attended a multi-cultural school during my adolescent years that exposed me to different ethnicities. I had not developed a culturally competent way of thinking until I entered into Wayne State University’s School of Social Work program this fall.
