MCA Practice Tests Reflection The three MCA practice tests I chose to take were the 5th-grade reading, math, and science. I chose all three in 5th-grade, because I am currently a student candidate in a 5th-grade classroom at Lyndale Community School in Minneapolis. I wanted a better insight into what my students would experience and what I can prepare them for. The MCAs are tests that are specifically aligned to our state’s rigorous academic standards. By taking these tests myself, I am able to compare the content of the questions to the standards my students know and still need to learn. Before taking the tests, I felt nervous because I was worried that I if I found it extremely difficult or didn’t pass, then how would I be qualified enough to teach my students to pass it. I am also an extremely nervous test taker and reading is not my strongest subject. However, I am really glad I took these test, because it allows me to share my experiences with my students and break down the test so it is less intimidating for them. As a teacher, I believe it is my job to inform parents why we take these tests and how the data allows me to see where each student is at and how I can adjust or modify my instruction to make sure their needs are met. I also believe it is important to break down the test for parents and students so we can identify objectives and create personal goals. It is critical to make learning meaningful and to incorporate questions and topics from the MCAs into real-life application.
